Tsavo East National Park

Destination Overview

Tsavo East National Park represents Kenya's largest protected area and one of the world's biggest wildlife sanctuaries, encompassing more than 13,700 square kilometers of wilderness. Famous for its dust-red elephants, rolling plains, and the legendary man-eating lions of Tsavo, this park offers a sense of vastness and untamed wilderness that's increasingly rare in modern Africa. The semi-arid landscape is dominated by the life-giving Galana River, creating a stark contrast between riverine oases and arid bushland. Distinctive features include the Yatta Plateau (one of the world's longest lava flows), Mudanda Rock (a natural wildlife viewing platform), and Lugard Falls on the Galana River. Less visited than Kenya's more famous parks, Tsavo East rewards visitors with uncrowded game viewing, spectacular scenery, and diverse wildlife including large elephant herds, buffalo, lions, leopards, and an impressive variety of bird species, all set against dramatic red earth backdrops.
