Samburu National Reserve

Destination Overview

Samburu National Reserve lies in Kenya's wild northern frontier country, a rugged, semi-desert landscape dissected by the life-giving Ewaso Ng'iro River. This remote and dramatic wilderness is renowned for its unique wildlife species collectively known as the 'Samburu Special Five': Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk antelope, and beisa oryx. The reserve offers a more exclusive safari experience compared to Kenya's more famous parks, with fewer visitors and a genuine sense of adventure. The landscape varies from acacia grasslands to riverine forests and palm groves, providing diverse habitats for wildlife. The cultural element adds another dimension to the Samburu experience, with opportunities to engage with the colorful Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, who have maintained their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle in these harsh but beautiful surroundings.
