Aberdare National Park

Destination Overview

The Aberdare National Park offers a completely different safari experience from Kenya's savanna parks, encompassing a lush, misty mountain range with dense forests, deep ravines, and cascading waterfalls. This high-altitude wilderness ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 meters features diverse habitats from rainforest to bamboo groves and moorlands. The park is famous for its unique tree hotels - elevated lodges where visitors can observe wildlife from above as animals come to waterholes and salt licks. The Aberdares gained historical significance as the location where Princess Elizabeth learned of her father's death and her ascension to the British throne while staying at Treetops Lodge in 1952. Beyond the iconic tree lodges, the park offers excellent hiking opportunities, trout fishing in crystal-clear mountain streams, and chances to spot elusive forest species including black leopards, giant forest hogs, and the rare bongo antelope. The misty, ethereal atmosphere and stunning landscapes provide photographers with unique opportunities rarely found elsewhere in Kenya.
